Minitab Real-Time SPC keeps process alerts separate from capability analysis

Minitab presents real-time control charts, rules, and alerts alongside process-capability analysis. An alert identifies evidence of unusual variation under a monitoring rule; a capability result answers a different question about process output relative to specifications and should not be inferred from the alert state.

A control-chart signal is evidence under a named rule

The direct product claim is live monitoring through automated charts, control rules, and alerts. A defensible signal record should preserve the characteristic, process, subgroup or observation, source system, timestamp, unit, chart family, center line, limits, rule, data window, exclusions, transformation, software version, and triggering points. Without that context, an alert cannot be reproduced or interpreted reliably.

The signal means the configured rule detected a pattern under the supplied data and limits. It does not automatically identify a physical cause, determine the amount of affected material, prove a defect, or authorize adjustment. Buyers should test a true shift, a bad sensor value, a late observation, a changed subgroup, and limits recalculated after a process change.

Stability review comes before a capability conclusion

Control charts address process behavior over time; capability analysis compares the process distribution with specification requirements under stated assumptions. A process can be statistically stable yet poorly centered or too variable for the specification. It can also appear to meet specifications in a short sample while an assignable cause makes a capability summary unreliable.

A governed workflow should therefore retain the stability period, rational subgroup rationale, distribution or transformation, specification source and revision, measurement-system evidence, sampling conditions, excluded data, capability statistic, confidence or uncertainty where used, reviewer, and approved use. The dashboard should not derive capable from no current alerts or incapable from one signal.

Response, disposition, and improvement need separate owners

An alert may prompt containment, investigation, increased sampling, equipment review, material segregation, or no action after qualified review. Those decisions have different evidence and authority. The production or engineering response should remain linked to the original signal without changing the source data or treating acknowledgement as resolution.

A demonstration should show alert receipt, escalation, investigation, cause evidence, affected-lot analysis, material disposition, process adjustment, approval, follow-up data, and effectiveness review. It should also show an alert that is rejected with rationale and a recurring pattern after closure. Product release and customer acceptance remain controlled decisions outside the statistical notification itself.

Real-time visibility does not validate the statistical system

Minitab's official page establishes named monitoring and analysis capabilities. This review did not test data collection, latency, calculation accuracy, chart selection, rule behavior, limits, capability analysis, integrations, permissions, alerts, or manufacturing outcomes. Exact features, configuration, services, and release behavior require buyer verification.

Quality, manufacturing, process engineering, metrology, information technology, operations, product, customer, auditor, and legal owners should define the method and decision rights. The system should expose the data, assumptions, calculation, signal, response, capability study, and release evidence instead of compressing them into a single red or green process score.

Enterprise buyer test

Translate this change into the exact population, record type, workflow stage, decision owner, effective date, and evidence that could be affected. Ask current or prospective providers to demonstrate the named workflow with representative data and an exception—not a polished feature tour. Record what official documentation establishes, what a provider states, what the team observes, and what remains unresolved.

A defensible review also identifies the dependency outside the product. Authority interpretation, policy configuration, data quality, integrations, human judgment, approval rights, release governance, training, and retained evidence may remain customer or service responsibilities. The evaluation should preserve those boundaries instead of treating a technology claim as the complete operating model.
